Characteristics

Spreading plants to c. 1 m tall, without a basal tuft of leaves. Culms decumbent or at first erect, wiry, usually branching at nodes; nodes 3–7, exserted, glabrous. Leaves: sheath tight, glabrous to tuberculate; ligule a tuft of minute hairs; auricles absent; blade readily deciduous, thickened, to 1 mm long, 0.15 mm wide, glabrous. Inflorescence 2–3.5 cm long, open, reduced to 1–3 spikelets; spikelets gaping. Glumes subequal to equal, 18–30 mm long, acute. Callus c. 2–3 mm long, weakly bent, white-sericeous. Lemma narrowly cylindrical, c. 13–20 mm long, tuberculate, sericeous; coma absent; lobes c. 3 mm long; awn 50–100 mm long, scabrous, with column 40–55 mm long. Palea 75% of length of lemma, acute to acuminate. Lodicules 3, acute or erose.
