Characteristics

Plants to c. 1 m tall, shortly rhizomatous, with shoots conspicuously extravaginal. Culms geniculate; nodes 3–5, exserted. Leaves: ligule 0.2–0.7 mm long, truncate, coriaceous, ciliate, with abaxial surface sericeous; auricles spreading, tufted at base; blade expanded or loosely rolled, to 8 mm wide, scaberulous or occasionally ±glabrous on abaxial surface. Inflorescence to 40 cm long, loosely contracted, dense; spikelets gaping. Glumes subequal, 8.5–10 mm long, acuminate. Callus 0.5–1.2 mm long, curved, with hairs similar to those of lemma. Lemma cylindrical to fusiform, 4.5–6.0 mm long, granular, with white hairs; coma 0.2–0.8 mm long; lobes 1 or 2, c. 0.1 mm long; awn 25–40 mm long, with a scaberulous and densely pubescent column 15–20 mm long, and scabrous bristle. Palea to 0.5 mm shorter than lemma, broadly acute to obtuse. Lodicules 3, spathulate or triangular.
