Characteristics

Plants to c. 1 m tall, shortly rhizomatous. Leaves: ligule 2–3 mm long, truncate, papery; auricles glabrous; blade usually expanded, to 25 cm long, 2–5 mm wide, scaberulous to sparsely pubescent on abaxial surface, glabrous or tuberculate on margins. Inflorescence to 30 cm long, contracted, with distant fascicles of sparsely-to densely-flowered unequal branches. Glumes equal, 4–5.5 mm long, obtuse to broadly acute; tips ciliate. Callus 0.5–0.8 mm long, strongly curved, sharp, sericeous. Lemma 3–4 mm long, slightly granular, brown at maturity, with white hairs; coma absent; lobes c. 0.1 mm long, or absent; awn slightly twice-geniculate, (14–) 20–30 mm long, c. 0.15 mm wide near base, scaberulous. Palea 80% of length of lemma, broadly acute, ciliate. Lodicules 2 or 3, obtuse.
