Characteristics

Plants to 1 m tall, with shoots conspicuously extravaginal. Culms erect; nodes c. 3, just exserted or concealed. sericeous. Leaves: ligule 0.5–2 mm long, ovate to truncate, ciliate, coriaceous; auricles spreading; blade rolled, to 20 cm long, 0.5–1.0 mm wide, sometimes slightly ribbed and glabrous to scaberulous on abaxial surface. Inflorescence 10–25 cm long, spreading, sparse; spikelets gaping. Glumes slightly unequal, 11–17 mm long, acute to acuminate. Callus 2–3 mm long, straight, sericeous with hairs darker than on lemma. Lemma fusiform to cylindrical, 7–9 mm long, with translucent tubercules, deep reddish brown at maturity, with stiff, yellow hairs in lower half; coma absent; lobes 1 or 2, 0.1–0.35 (–0.6) mm long; awn 50–70 mm long, with a pubescent column 18–25 mm long and bristle scabrous, slightly curved. Palea ±equal to lemma, acute. Lodicules 3, oblong to narrowly cuneate or triangular.
