Characteristics

Plants to c. 1 m tall, with a basal tuft of leaves, with shoots conspicuously extravaginal. Culms erect; nodes 2 or 3, exserted, densely sericeous. Leaves: ligule 0.6–2 mm long, obtuse, ciliate, coriaceous; auricles absent; blade tightly rolled, 1–2 mm wide, with adaxial surface strongly ribbed, densely pubescent. Inflorescence 11–25 cm long, contracted; spikelets gaping widely. Glumes unequal, 18–29 mm long, acute. Callus 2.7–3.5 mm long, weakly bent, with white to slightly reddish brown hairs. Lemma cylindrical, 10–13 mm long, smooth to finely tuberculate upwards, pale reddish brown at maturity, with sparse white hairs in lower half; lobes and coma absent; awn 55–95 mm long, sometimes thrice-geniculate, scabrous, with column 30–60 mm long. Palea subequal to lemma, acute. Lodicules 2, oblong.
