Characteristics

Plants to c. 2.5 m tall. Culms with numerous branches at each node; nodes (3–) 6–9. Leaves: sheath becoming loose, 3–3.5 mm wide, glabrous; ligule 0.25–0.5 mm long, erose; blade readily deciduous, expanded, 1–10 mm wide, slightly ribbed, scabrous, with margins scabrous. Inflorescence 8–50 cm long, open. Glumes subequal, 2.3–5 mm long, acute. Callus bent, with white hairs. Lemma 1.8–2.5 mm long, tuberculate, very dark brown, glabrous or with a few white hairs at base; awn 14–30 mm long, strongly once-geniculate, scabrous, with column 4–7 mm long. Palea c. 30% length of lemma.
