Characteristics

Annual or perennial to 0.45 m tall. Leaves: ligule 3.5–8 (–13) mm long, laciniate; blade often folded, to 18 cm long, 1.5–4 mm wide, with abaxial surface unribbed and glabrous except for the very sparsely scabrous long-acute tip. Inflorescence 9–20 cm long, slightly spreading; spikelets scarcely gaping at maturity and widely gaping after floret disarticulation. Glumes unequal, 14–18 mm long, acuminate, hyaline at apex. Callus 2.5–3 mm long, with a tuft of hairs. Lemma 6–7 mm long, dark brown at maturity, antrorsely scabrous on neck, glabrous or with very sparse hairs, denser along margins; coma 1–1.5 mm long; awn (80–) 90–125 mm long, ±straight to gently twice-geniculate or sinuate. Palea subequal to lemma, obtuse. Lodicules 3, spathulate.
