Characteristics

Perennial herbs with a tunicated corm. Stem simple. Leaves basal and cauline, tubular-sheathing at base. Inflorescence a bracteate raceme, or sometimes a solitary flower. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, pedicellate, erect. Perianth segments 6, subequal, ±clawed, free. Stamens 6, inserted on perianth at junction of claws and blades; anthers dorsifixed, versatile, dehiscing by slits, latrorse. Ovary superior, cylindrical; locules 3, each with numerous ovules; styles 3, free. Fruit an elongate, 3-angled capsule, septicidal. Seeds numerous, brown.
