Characteristics

Scandent shrub up to 5 m high or liana up to 15 m high; trunk up to 8 cm in diameter; branches dark red-brown, smooth; branchlets minutely pubescent or puberulous.. Leaves petiolate; lamina obovate or elliptic, 3.4–16 cm long, 1.3–6.2 cm wide, acuminate or apiculate, rarely acute to obtuse at the apex, obtuse to rounded at the base, pubescent on midrib and secondary veins above, red-pubescent beneath; secondary veins in 7–12 pairs, domatia present; petiole 3–10 mm long, pubescent, with colleters above.. Inflorescence axillary and terminal, few-to many-flowered cymes, pubescent; peduncle red, 7–28 mm long; pedicles dark red, 1.5–4 mm long.. Flowers fragrant; sepals dark red, ovate or oblong, 1.6–3.9 mm long, variablypubescent outside, ciliate, with colleters within; corolla greenish in bud, white at anthesis; tube 3.5–4.9 mm long; scales distinct, 1.2–1.5 mm from the base; corolla lobes ovate or strap-shaped, 6–24 mm long, obtuse or acute at the apex, glabrous to puberulous outside, glabrous inside; disk 0.1–1.3 mm long; ovary subglobose or cylindrical variably pubescent; style 0.7–1 mm long, pubescent.. Fruit follicles dark red-brown, 38–75 cm long, 0.3–0.5 mm wide, puberulous or glabrescent; seeds black, 12–21 mm long, coma pale red, 18–26 mm long.. Fig. 34 (p. 103).
