Characteristics

Plants erect and usually forming large stands. Culms 10–20 m high, to about 10 cm diam.; mid-culm internodes hollow, glabrescent. Leaves auriculate when young; basal sheath ciliate; ligule ciliate or erose; blade linear-lanceolate, to 30 cm long, to 4.5 cm wide, appressedciliate to hirsute on margins, without cross venation; adaxial blade surface pubescent to shortly hirsute with appressed hairs, grooved along central vein; abaxial blade surface pubescent to shortly pilose with appressed hairs. Pseudospikelets (10–) 15–40 (–70) mm long; rachilla segments flattened, 1.5–2 mm long, densely villous with appressed antrorse hairs; rachilla extension with reduced sterile florets. Glumes 2–4; longest glume 4.5–8 mm long, c. 15-nerved. Bisexual florets: lemma lanceolate, 7–8 mm long, acute, dorsally rounded, 14–16-nerved with nerves connected by obvious transverse veins, glabrous; palea elliptic to lanceolate, 7–8.5 mm long, narrowly truncate, 11–16-nerved; anthers 5–6 mm long.
