Characteristics

Liane to 15–25 m. in height; branches with brownish red bark, becoming pale and flaky with age; main stem exceeding 10 cm. in diameter.. Leaves with a channelled petiole 3–9 mm. long; blade papery, elliptic, (5–)9–14 cm. long, 3–5 cm. wide, acuminate or caudate, cuneate, discolorous, green above and brown beneath when dry, margin crenulate-dentate with 20–25 teeth on each side; secondary veins in 6–8 pairs, arcuately ascending and with a fine reticulate venation clearly visible on both surfaces in the dried state.. Stipules narrowly lanceolate, acute, 1–2 mm. long.. Inflorescence of compact, axillary, opposite, dichotomous cymes, often appearing subumbellate; bracts 1–1.5 mm. long, ciliolate; peduncle 1–2.5 cm. long; upper axes shorter, glabrous or finely puberulous; pedicels 1–3 mm. long, rugulose or minutely papillose, becoming thickened after fertilization.. Buds 2–2.5 mm. in diameter, flattened at the apex.. Flowers white at first changing to orange, rose-salmon and finally brownish red, not opening out fully, 4–5 mm. in diameter.. Sepals ovate, 1 mm. long, finely denticulate.. Petals very fleshy, unequal, incurved and never spreading.. Stamens very short.. Stigma sessile or subsessile, trilobed.. Mericarps elliptic, often attenuate, 6–8 cm. long, 2–3 cm. wide, sometimes emarginate; valves brownish, reddish inside..
