Caulis in parte superiore ramosus, foliatus, in partibus iunioribus pilis glanduliferis minutis plerumque sparsis obtectus et ceterum leviter araneosus vel rarius tomentosus, glabrescens. Folia alterna, plerumque ± coriacea, inferiors ambitulate lanceolata vel elliptica, cr. 10-35 cm longa, 5-10 cm lata, petiolata petiolo cr. 1-6 cm longo spinoso, pinnatilobata lobis in cr. 4-6 iugis dispositis ambitu semiorbicularibus vel late triangulatis in spinas cr. 3-6 mm longas excurrentibus, in inter-stitiis et in sinubus spinis minoribus ciliata; folia sequentia sensim minora, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, lineari-lanceolata, minus lobata et denique spinosi-dentata, suprema linearia, braeteiformia, omnia supra pilis hyalinis (glanduliferis?) brevibus dense vel sparse obtecta, in sicco scaberula vel laevia, ceterum interdum leviter araneosa et glabrescentia, subtus albi-tomentosa. Capitula in inflorescentiam paniculatam vel sub-corymbiformem disposita, radiata, ligulis expansis (4-)5-6 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, extus leviter tomentosae, intus subglabrae vel glabrae, lineari-lanceolatae, 1-2(-3) mm latae, spinosi-acuminatae, margine spinis 1-3 mm longis saepe geminatis in cr. 2-4-iugis dispositis obsitae, ceterum saepe spinulis minoribus ciliatae, mediae 10-25 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margins alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas 1-2 mm longas productae. Achaenia 2-2.5 mm longa, glabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 10, oblongae, tobtusae, apice denticulatae, cr. 0.5-0.8 mm longae.

A coarse perennial herb up to 1.2 m high, branching above into a large spreading panicle, stems cobwebby at first, later glabrous, leafy. Leaves up to 35 x 15 cm, about one third of the length spiny petiole, blade broadly lanceolate or elliptic, pinnatilobate, lobes c. 4-6 each side, rounded or triangular in outline, each with 3-4 large, coarse, spine-tipped teeth and lesser, shorter spines along the margins, upper leaves, particularly on the inflorescence branches, much smaller and less deeply lobed, sessile, half-clasping, upper surface harshly puberulous or nearly smooth, lower white-felted. Heads 4-6 cm across the expanded rays, many in a very large spreading panicle. Involucral bracts linear-lanceolate, up to 3 mm broad, spine-tipped, margins spiny particularly in the lower half, white-felted on the back. Rays and disc yellow. Achenes c. 2 mm long, turbinate, glabrous. Pappus scales less than 1 mm long, obtuse.
