Leaves ± shortly petiolate, mostly 5–15 x 1–2(5) cm., linear-elliptic, tapering-acute above with a 1–3 mm. long apical spine, margins serrulate-dentate occasionally coarsely so, the teeth tipped with ± ascending bristle-spines 1–3 mm. long, also with 1-several smaller spines between the teeth; leaf upper surface very thinly araneose, becoming glabrescent or ± scabrous, the lower surface whitish felted-tomentose.
Disk-floret corollas orange-yellow, c. 12 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, glandular hairy outside especially towards the lobe apices; achenes 2.5–4 mm. long, turbinate, slightly 8–10-ribbed, hispid-strigose; pappus ± 2-seriate of overlapping narrowly obovate-oblong stramineous scales, denticulate-fimbriate about the apex.
Capitula radiate, few to many, solitary and terminal on stem and branches, oldest at the stem apex and overtopped by the younger capitula on lower branches, 5–7 cm. in diam. including the rays.
Rays yellow, mostly 12–25 x 2–3.5 mm., 4-lobed at the apex often unequally and deeply so with 1 or 2 sinuses to c. 12 mm. deep.
Receptacular alveolae margins with 1–2 mm. long spinescent setae not exceeding the achene in length.
A slender perennial herb up to 1.5 m. tall, from a woody rootstock; roots thong-like.
Stems annual erect simple, or branched in the upper part, thinly araneose, leafy.
