Characteristics

Suffrutex erectus rigidus ramosus, cr. 30-50 cm altus. Rami foliati, tenuiter tomentosi, in partibus vetustioribus glabrescentes, interdum ± purpurascentes. Folia alterna, rigida, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, cr. 4-8 cm longa superioribus sensim minoribus, pinnatifida rhachide oblongi-lanceolata 3-7(-10) mm lata in spinam fulvam 3-5 mm longam acuminata, laciniis in 2-5 iugis dispositis ceterum basin folii versus compluribus laciniis minoribus et denique ad spinas reductis auctis lineari-subulatis vel triangulati-subulatis 5-15 mm longis apicem et basin folii versus decrescentibus 2-5 nun latis ut apex rhachidis in spinam excurrentibus cum laciniis alteris subaequilongis vel minoribus vel ad spinas reductis geminatis vel ternatis, margine subrevoluta vel revoluta, in interstitiis paucis spinis 0.5-3 mm longis obsita, supra et subtus tenuiter tomentosa, ceterum interdum ± glandulosa, deinde (imprimis supra) glabrescentia. Capitula in apicibus ramorum in inflorescentiam paniculatam disposita, discoidea, involucri squamis expansis 1.5-3 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pauciseriatae, ut folia tenuiter tomentosae et ± glabrescentes, triangulate-vel ovati-lanceolatae, 2-3 mm latae, in spinam 2-3 mm longam excurrentes, margine spinis 1-3 mm longis in 1-3 iugis dispositis solitariis vel geminatis divaricatis obsitae, plerumque in dimidio vel triente superiore subinermes vel inermes, mediae 10-15 mm longae, 2-3(-5) mm latae, ceterae minores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in fimbrias usque ad cr. 1 mm longas productae. Achaenia 2-3.5 mm longa, pilis brevissimis sparsis obtecta vel subglabra vel glabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 20, lineares vel lineari-oblongae, acutae vel subobtusae, denticulatae, 0.3-1 mm longae.

Leaves alternate, 2-5 pinnatisect, 40-80 mm long, felted and glandular-haired but glabrescent above, lobes subulate and spine-tipped, with spines 0.5-3 mm long. Flowerheads in small panicles, discoid, yellow, 15-30 mm diam.; involucral bracts spreading, connate into a distinct cup, outer small, median lanceolate with spiny margins, 10-15 mm long. Pappus scales ± 20, linear-oblong, denticulate, 0.3-1 mm long.
