Herba perennis rhizomate lignoso, (8-)10-40 cm alta. Caulis erectus, simplex vel in parte superiore parce ramosus, pilis hyalinis glanduliferis ± dense obtectus et ceterum ± araneosi-tomentosus, foliatus. Folia alterna, basalia conferta, subrosulata, rigide membranacea vel subcoriacea, anguste lanceolata vel oblongi-lanceolata vel anguste obovata, in petiolum angustata, apice acuta vel subobtusa, petiolo incluso (5-)10-18 cm longa,(7-)15-40 mm lata, margine plana, sinuati-dentata dentibus in spinas fulvas 2-6 mm longas excurrentibus, supra glabra vel interdum pilis hyalinis glanduliferis ± sparse obtecta, subtus albidi-tomentosa; folia caulina cito, rarius sensim minora, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, ovati-lanceolata vel anguste oblonga, apice acuta, in spinam excurrentia, margine spinosi-dentata vel spinosi-ciliata, supra glabra vel interdum pilis hyalinis glanduliferis obtecta, subtus tomentosa, interdum ± glabrescentia. Capitula plerumque 3-5 in apicibus ramorum inflorescentiam subracemiformem formantia vel in apice caulis simplicis solitaria, radiata, expansa 6-8(-10) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, rigidae, partim pilis glanduliferis minutis sparse obtectae, exteriores interdum extus ± tomentosae, ceterum glabrae, spinosi-acuminatae, exteriores foliis supremis similes et in ea transgredientes, ovatae vel ovati-lanceolatae, cr. 6-10 mm latae, ± planae, margine dense spinis 2-3 mm longis ciliatae, sequentes sensim angustiores, denique lineari-subulatae, 2-3 mm et denique 1-2 mm latae, margine brevius spinosi-ciliatae et denique brevissime setulosi-ciliatae, mediae 25-45(-50) mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi integerrimae. Achaenia cr. 1.5-2.5 mm longa, pilis sericeis dense obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, lanceolatae, acutae, margine denticulati-ciliatae, cr. 2-3.5 mm longae.
