Characteristics

Suffrutex vel frutex ut videtur pauciramosus, fide collect, cr. 25-60 cm altus. Rami erecti, foliati (plerumque in partibus superioribus sub capitulis ± laxius foliati quam in partibus inferioribus), albidi-tomentosi, in partibus vetustioribus glabrescentes et denique cortice fusco rimoso obtecti. Folia opposita, saepe tamen superiora alterna, coriacea, lanceolata vel elliptica, 2-4(-6) cm longa, 8-15(-25) mm lata supremis saepe paulum minoribus. apice acuta vel subacuta, in spinam fulvam 2-8(-10) mm longam excurrentia, basi ± in petiolum brevissimum semiamplexicaulem angustata, margine ± plana vel subrevoluta, ± sinuati-dentata dentibus in cr. 4-6 iugis (non autem semper regulariter) dispositis saepe geminatis in spinas ei in apice similes excurrentibus, nunc manifestis 2-3(-5) mm longis (spinis exceptis), nunc inconspicuis, supra glabra vel interdum primum tenuiter tomentosa et glabrescentia, opaca, subtus albidi-tomentosa. Capitula in apicibus ramorum solitaria, radiata, speciosa, ligulis expansis 6-8(-10) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, extus tomentosae, intus subglabrae (sed partim pilis glanduliferis minutis obsitae), in spinam 4-12 mm longam interdum tenuem et flexilem acuminatae, exteriores lanceolatae, 2-4 mm latae (interdum autem extimae latitudine foliorum), margine spinis ut in foliis obsitae, sequentes sensim lineari-lanceolatae vel lineari-subulatae, denique 1-1.5(-2) mm latae, margine densius et brevius spinosiciliatae, mediae 15-25(-30) mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi integerrimae. Achaenia cr. 2-3 mm longa, pilis sericeis dense obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, 10+10, lanceolatae, acutae, denticulatae vel breviter fimbriatae, 2-4 mm longae.
