Perennial herb, up to 1.5 m high. Stems winged, spinose. Leaves alternate; fairly densely set all along stem; sessile, base semi-amplexicaul, decurrent on stem; blade of basal and middle leaves elliptic to ovate in outline, up to ± 150 x 50 mm, pinnatilobate, lobes up to 6 on each side, margins coarsely dentate, teeth triangular, spine-tipped, spinose-ciliate in between, upper surface harshly glandular-pubescent, lower surface grey-or white-cobwebby; blade of upper leaves less deeply divided. Heads radiate, 40-60 mm in diameter, several, corymbose-paniculately arranged, pedunculate. Involucral bracts connate at base, narrowly ovate, up to 3 mm wide, apex and margins spiny, back very lightly cobwebby-glandular. Flowers: ray and disc florets yellow; Feb. Fruit with cypsela turbinate, glabrous, ± 2 mm long. Pappus of scales, uniseriate, 0.2-0.5 mm long, obtuse.

Leaves up to c. 15 x 5 cm, oblong in outline, slightly narrowed to the base, subpetiolate or sessile, half-clasping and decurrent on the stem in broad spiny wings, pinnatilobate, lobes up to 6 each side, coarsely and deeply toothed, teeth triangular, spine-tipped, margins spinose-ciliate, upper surface harshly glandular-pubescent, lower grey-or white-cobwebby. Heads 4-6 cm across the expanded rays, several corymbose-paniculately arranged. Involucral bracts lanceolate, up to 3 mm broad, tip and margins spiny, very lightly cobwebby-glandular on the back. Rays and disc yellow. Achenes c. 2 mm long, turbinate, glabrous. Pappus scales c. 0.5 mm long, obtuse.
