Characteristics

Herba perennis erecta, fide collect, cr. 1-1.5 m alta. Caulis in parte superiore ramosus, saepe maculis fuscis linearibus striatus, pilis hyalinis glanduliferis densis puberulus, foliatus et partibus supremis exceptis alatus. Folia alterna, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, inferiora et media ambitu oblongi-obovata, basin versus angustata (interdum subpetiolata), cr. 10-15(-20) cm longa, 3-6 cm lata, pinnatilobata lobis in cr. 4-5 iugis dispositis ambitu semiorbicularibus grosse dentatis (dentibus triangulatis in spinas 2-4 mm longas excurrentibus), in interstitiis et in sinubus spinis minoribus ciliata; folia superiora sensim minora et minus divisa, denique lanceolata, spinosi-dentata; omnia supra pilis hyalinis glanduliferis brevibus obtecta, in sicco scaberula vel scabra, subtus albidivel cani-(plerumque tenuiter) tomentosa, decurrentia in alas cr. 2-5 mm latas spinosi-ciliatas. Capitula in inflorescentiam subcorymbiformem disposita, radiata, ligulis expansis 4-6(-7) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, imprimis extus pilis glanduliferis minutis dense obtectae, lanceolatae, 1-2 mm latae, spinosi-acuminatae, margine spinis 1-3 mm longis saepe geminatis vel ternatis divaricatis in cr. 2-4 iugis dispositis obsitae et ceterum spinulis minoribus ciliatae, mediae 8-15 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas 1-3 mm longas productae. Achaenia cr. 2-2.5 mm longa, glabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 10, oblongae, obtusae, denticulatae, 0.2-0.5 mm longae, interdum ± in coronam connatae.
