Characteristics

Herba perennis erecta, cr. 30-60 cm alta. Caulis in parte superiore ramosus, pilis hyalinis (glanduliferis?) puberulus et ceterum araneosus, foliatus. Folia alterna, sessilia, basalia conferta, subrosulata velrosulata, obovati-oblonga, basin versus angustata, apice rotundata, 10-15 cm longa, 2.5-6 cm lata, ± sinuati-lobata lobis sinuati-dentatis dentibus in spinas flavas vel fulvas 3-10 mm longas excurrentibus, supra et subtus pilis hyalinis dense puberula et ceterum araneosa, subtus saepe araneosi-tomentosa; folia caulina sensim minora, lineari-oblonga, semiamplexicaulia, acuminata, grosse spinosi-dentata, indumento basalibus similia, supra autem saepe ± glabrescentia. Capitula in apicibus ramorum inflorescentiam racemiformem formantia, radiata, ligulis expansis 4-6(-7) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, extus araneosae, intus subglabrae vel glabrae, spinosi-acuminatae, extsriores et mediae ovati-lanceolatae, (3-)4-8 mm latae, margine spinis saepe geminatis cr. 3-5 am longis in 2-3 iugis dispositis obsitae, imprimis mediae manifeste convexae, interiores planae, triangulati-lanceolatae, 1-3 mm latae, spinis paulum minoribus ciliatae, mediae 12-20 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas 1-2(-3) mm longas productae. Achaenia 2-3 mm longa, pilis brevissimis sparsis obteota vel subglabra. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, oblongae vel obovati-oblongae, apice rotundatae, vix vel paulum dentioulatae, cr. 0.5-1 mm longae.
