Folia alterna, rigida, squarrosa, saepe dense conferta, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, 4-8 cm longa superioribus sensim minoribus, pinnatifida rhachide lineari 1.5-3 mm lata in spinam fulvam 1.5-3 mm longam excurrentia, laciniis in 4-6 iugis dispositis interdum non regulariter oppositis lineari-subulatis 10-25 mm longis basin folii versus decrescentibus et in basi ipsa compluribus laciniis minoribus vel ad spinas reductis auctis 1-2 mm latis ut apex rhachidis in spinam excurrentibus cum laciniis subaequalibus vel minoribus geminatis rarius solitariis, margine revoluta, supra levissime tomentosa, glabrescentia, subtus albi-tomentosa. Capitula in apicibus ramorum ± conferta, in inflorescentias subpaniculatas disposita, radiata vel interdum discoidea, involucri squamis expansis 2-3 cm diam. Involucri squamae rigidi-patentes, pauciseriatae, extus ut folia tomentosae, intus glabrae vel levissime tomentosae, lineari-vel triangulati-subulatae, spinosi-acuminatae, 1-1.5 mm latae, exteriores margine basin versus spinis 2-3 mm longis saepe geminatis in 2-3 iugis dispositis obsitae, sequentes spinis brevioribus ciliatae, mediae 8-15 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas 1-1.5 mm longas productae. Achaenia 2-3 mm longa, pilis brevissimis obtecta vel subglabra vel glabra. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, obiongae vel ovatae vel sub-rotundae, apice minute denticulatae (interiores interdum bilobae), 0.2-0.5 mm longae.

Shrub up to 1.2 m high. Stems not winged, densely leafy. Leaves alternate, scattered along stem, sessile; blade up to 80 mm long, pinnatifid, leaf segments linear, 4-6 on each side, up to 3 mm wide, each lobe ending in a rigid spine, margins entire, revolute, upper surface sparsely hairy, glabrescent, lower surface white-felted. Heads radiate or sometimes apparently discoid, up to 40 mm in diameter, subpaniculately arranged terminally, shortly pedunculate. Involucral bracts connate at base, linear, 1.0-1.5 mm wide, apex with rigid spine, margins without or only few, small spines near base, white-felted on backs. Flowers: ray and disc florets yellow; flowering time? Fruit with cypsela turbinate, pilose or glabrous, 2-3 mm long. Pappus of scales, biseriate, 0.2-0.5 mm long, oblong or ovate.
Perennial shrub, 0.5-1.2 m high; densely branched. Leaves closely set, pinnatisect, linear, upper surface glabrescent, lower surface woolly. Capitula terminal, paniculate; involucral bracts concrescent at base, outer ones leaf-like, but smaller, inner ones erect, closely spinose-ciliate. Receptacle flat, with small erect ovate paleae with acute laciniate apices. Ray florets few (absent in some capitula), yellow, ligulate. Disc florets many, yellow, tubular. Flowering time Oct.? Pappus biseriate, outer scales oblong or obovate, obtuse, inner scales narrower and bifid. Cypselae obconical, angled and striate.
