Characteristics

Herba perennis erecta, 30-80 cm alta. Caulis in parte superiore ramosus, pilis hyalinis glanduliferis ± dense vel sparse obtectus et ceterum imprimis superne leviter araneosi-tomentosus, foliatus et partibus supremis ex-ceptis alatus. Folia alterna, basalia ± conferta, ambitu anguste oblonga, basin versus sensim in petlolum an-gustata, cr. 15-30(-35) cm longa, (1.5-)2-4 cm lata, pinnatifida laciniis in cr. 12-20 iugis (interdum non regulariter) dispositis ambitu semiorbicularibus vel subrotundis leviter repandi-dentatis dentibus in spinas fulvas 2-3 mm longas excurrentibus, in interstitiis et in sinubus spinis brevioribus dense ciliata, supra et subtus pills hyalinis (glanduliferis?) sparsis obtecta vel subglabra; folia caulina sensim minora et sessilia, ceterum basalibus similia, superiora sensim minus lo-bata et denique subintegerrima, linearia, bracteiformia, omnia caulina (supremis exceptis) decurrentia in alas 3-5 mm latas ut folia spinosi-dentati-lobatas vel spinosi-dentatas. Capitula in apicibus ramorum in inflores-centiam subpaniculatam vel subcorymbiformem disposita, discoidea, 1.5-2(-3) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, exteriores extus leviter araneosi-tomentosae, ceterae subglabrae vel glabrae, lineari-subulatae, 0.5-1 mm latae, spinosi-acuminatae, exteriores et mediae margine spinis 1-3 mm longis saepe geminatis in cr. 2-3 iugis dispositis et qeterum interdum singulis spinis minoribus obsitae, interiores sensim minus spinosae et denique inermes, brevissime denticulatae, mediae 5-7 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum recentaculi in setas stramineas 4-10 mm longas productae. Achaenia 1.5-2.5 mm longa, glabra. Pappi squamae in cylindrum 1-2 mm longum apice irregulariter denticulatum connatae vel partim irregulariter laceratae.
