Characteristics

Herba perennis rhizomate lignoso, 20-45 cm alta. Caulis erectus, simplex vel saepius in parte superiore ramosus, pilis glanduliferis dense puberulus, foliatus. Folia alterna, basalia conferta, subrosulata, rigide membranacea vel subcoriacea, oblongi-lanceolata vel anguste obovata, basin versus ± in petiolum angustata, (6-)10-20 cm longa, (1-)2-4 cm lata, apice subacuta vel obtusa, margine ± plana, irregulariter sinuati-dentata dentibus in spinas fulvas 2-5 mm longas excurrentibus, supra pilis glanduliferis minutis sparse obtecta, glabrescentia, subtus albidi-tomentosa; folia caulina cito, rarius sensim minora, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, cordati-ovata vel ovati-oblonga, apice acuta, in spinam excurrentia, margine spinosi-dentata vel spinosi-ciliata, supra et subtus pilis glanduliferis dense obtecta. Capitula plerumque 3-5 in apicibus ramorum inflorescentiam subcorym-biformem vel subracemiformem formantia, rarius in apice caulis simplicis solitaria, radiata, ligulis expansis (4-)5-7 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pilis glanduliferis dense obtectae, spinosi-acuminatae, extimae foliis supremis similes et in ea transgredientes, ovati-lanceolatae, (3-)4-5 mm latae, planae, margine spinosiciliatae spinis 2-5(-7) mm longis, sequentes angustiores, lineari-subulatae, 1-1.5 mm et denique cr. 0.5 mm latae, spinis tenuibus ciliatae, mediae 20-35 mm longae, ceterae paulum breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi integerrimae. Achaenia cr. 1.5-2 mm longa, pilis sericeis dense obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, anguste lanceolatae, acutae, margine denticulati-ciliatae, cr. 1.5-2 mm longae.
