Characteristics

Herba perennis erecta, cr. 30-60 cm alta. Caulis simplex vel in parte superiore ramosus, imprimis superne araneosi-tomentosus, inferne ceterum saepe pilis hyalinis (glanduliferis?) obtectus, foliatus et partibus supremis exceptis alatus. Folia alterna, basalia ± conferta, ambitu obovati-oblonga vel elliptici-oblonga, basin versus in petiolum spinosi-ciliatum longitudine variantem interdum brevem angustata, patiolo incluso (10-)20-25(-40) cm longa,(3-)5-7(-10) cm lata, sinuati-pinnatilobata vel rarius pinnatifida lobis ambitu semiorbicularibus in cr. 5-9 iugis dispositis irregulariter dentatis (dentibus in spinas fulvas 3-8 mm longas excurrentibus) in interstitiis et in sinubus spinis brevioribus dense obsitis, supra pilis nyalinis glanduliferis ± dense obtecta, in sicco scaberula vel subglabra et laevia, interdium leviter araneosa, subtus albidi-vel nivei-tomentosa vel interdum tenuiter tomentosa vel araneosa et ceterum pilis byalinis puberula; folia caulina sensim sessilia et minora, denique lanceolata vel linearia, margine ut basalia formata, sed superiors minus divisa spinosi-dentata et denique subintegerrima, indumento basalibus similia, decurrentia in alas 2-8 mm latas ut folia spinosi-dentatas et-ciliatas. Capitula complura in apicibus ramorum vel solitaria in apice caulis simplicis, radiata, ligulis expansis 6-8 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentee, extus tomentosae (sub tomento saepe pilis glanduliferis minutissimis obsitae), intus glabrae (interiores interdum ceterum extus subglabrae), lanceolatae, spinosi-acuminatae, exteriores 2-3 mm latae, margine spinis cr. 2-4 mm longis obsitae et ceterum spinulis minoribus dense ciliatae, sequentes sensim paulum angustiores et denique 1-2 mm latae, spinis cr. 1 mm longis dense ciliatae, mediae 15-25 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas 2-3 mm longas productae. Achaenia cr. 2-35 mm longa, glabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 10, oblongae, obtusae, apice denticulatae, 1-1.5 mm longae.
