Herba perennis erecta, 30-70 cm alta. Caulis in parte superiore ramosus, pilis glanduliferis minutis dense obtectus, foliatus et partibus supremis exceptis alatus. Folia alterna, sessilia, basalia ± conferta, ambitu anguste oblonga vel lanceolata, basin versus angustata, 10-20 cm longa, 15-30(-50) mm lata, grosse sinuate-dentata vel leviter sinuati-pinnatilobata lobis subsemiorbicularibus grosse dentatis, dentibus in spinas fulvas 3-10 mm longas excurrentibus, in interstitiis et in sinubus spinulis minoribus dense ciliata, supra pilis glanduliferis minutis ± dense vel sparse obtecta, glabrescentia, in sicco scaberula vel sublaevia, subtus albidi-tomentosa (rarissime ut in facie superiore vestita); folia caulina sensim minora et denique bracteiformia, ceterum basalibus similia, decurrentia (supremis exceptis) in alas 2-3(-5)mm latas ut folia sinuati-splnosi-dentatas. Capitula in apicibus ramorum inflorescentiam subcorymbiformem formantia, radiata, ligulis expansis 4-6(-7) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pilis glanduliferis minutis dense obtectae, lanceolatae vel lineari-lanceolatae,exteriores 1-2(-3)mm latae, sequentes sensim paulum angustiores et denique (0.5-)1 mm latae, spinosi-acuminatae, margine spinis 2-4 mm longis geminatis divaricatis in cr. 2-4 iugis dispositis obsitae et ceterum spinulis minoribus dense ciliatae, mediae 12-15 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas 1-4 mm longas productae. Achaenia 1.5-2.5 mm longa, glabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 10, oblongae, obtusae, ad apicem denticulatae, cr. 0.7-1 nun longae.
