More
A perennial herb up to 2 m tall, branching above, stems glandular-pubescent, sometimes cobwebby at first, leafy. Leaves up to 35 x 18 cm, obovate-oblong in outline, the lower narrowed to a petiole-like base, the upper broad-based, half-clasping, all with spiny rounded basal auricles, not decurrent, margins sinuate-pinnatilobate or pinnatifid, up to 6 lobes each side, rounded, triangular or irregular in outline, coarsely sinuate-dentate or less deeply cut, the teeth spine-tipped, margins spinose-ciliate, upper surface harshly glandular-pubescent, lower commonly grey-or white-felted, sometimes merely glandular-pubescent. Heads 3-5 cm across the expanded rays, many in an open, paniculate compound inflorescence. Involucral bracts linear-lanceolate, up to 3 mm broad, margins spinose-ciliate, usually glandular on the back, sometimes cobwebby as well. Rays and disc yellow. Achenes up to 2.5 mm long, turbinate, glabrous or nearly so. Pappus scales less than 1 mm long, obtuse.
