Characteristics

Herba perennis erecta, 50-110 cm alta. Caulis in parte superiore parce ramosus, dense nivei-tomentosus, foliatus. Folia alterna, sessilia, basalia conferta, subrosulata, oblonga vel obovati-oblonga, basin versus angustata, margine ± plana, sinuati-dentati-lobata lobis ambitu triangulatis vel semiorbicularibus dentatis dentibus in spinas fulvas 4-12 cm longas excurrentibus, cr. 10-20 cm longa, 3-5 cm lata, supra et subtus dense nivei-tomentosa; folia caulina distantiora internodiis (2-)4-8 cm longis, sensim minora, suprema cr. 2 cm longa, 5 mm lata, inferiora ut basalia spinosi-dentati-lobata, sequentia spinosi-dentata, omnia indumento basalibus similia. Capitula in apicibus ramorum inflores-centiam subracemiformem formantia, plerumque ± conferta, radiata, ligulis expansis 5-6 cm diam. Involucri squamae pilis glanduliferis minutis obtectae (exteriores ceterum ± tomentosae), lineari-subulatae, cr. 1 mm (intimae cr. 0.5 mm) latae, spinosi-acuminatae, margine spinis fulvis 3-5 mm longis (in intimis brevioribus) in 1-3 iugis obsitae, mediae 20-25 mm longae, ceterae paulum breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in dentes breves productae. Achaenia cr. 1.5-2 mm longa, pilis sericeis dense obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, lanceolatae vel oblongae, acutae, ad apicem denticulatae, cr. 0.5-0.7 mm longae.
