Characteristics

Frutex erectus ramosus ± squarrosus, fide collect, cr. 0.5-1(-1.5) m altus. Rami patentes, usque ad capitula ± aequaliter foliati, albidi-vel cinerei-tomentosi, in partibus vetustioribus glabrescentes et cortice fusco vel cinereo obtecti. Folia alterna, membranacea, late lanceolata vel elliptica, 2-4(-5) cm longa, 1-2(-2.5) cm lata supremis sensim minoribus, apice acuta, in spinam fulvam 1-4 mm longam excurrentia, in petiolum brevem vel brevissimum angustata (interdum subsessilia), petiolo auriculas spinosas (in ramis vetustioribus interdum delapsas) gerente, margine plana, rarius subrevoluta, leviter vel levissime repandi-dentata, dentibus utrinque cr. 4-5, in spinas ei in apice similes excurrentibus, in intefstitiis spinis minoribus irregulariter obsita, supra tenuiter tomentosa vel subglabra et fere nitentia, subtus albidi-vel cinerei-tomentosa. Capitula in apicibus ramorum solitaria, radiata, ligulis expansis 3.5-5 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pauciseriatae, extus tomentosae, intus levissime tomentosae vel subglabrae, spinosi-acuminatae, exteriores lineari-lanceolatae, cr. 2(-3)mm latae, margine spinis eis in foliis similibus solitariis vel geminatis in 2-3 iugis obsitae, sequentes sensim paulum angustiores et denique lineari-subulatae, cr. 1 mm latae, margine brevius et densius spinosi-ciliatae, mediae cr. 10-18 mm longae, ceterae paulum breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in dentes breves productae. Achaenia 1.5-2 mm longa, pilis sericeis dense obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, lanceolatae vel rarius obovati-lanceolatae, acutae vel rarius subobtusae, apicem versus denticulatae, 1.5-2 mm longae.

Leaves alternate, petiolate, base of petiole with spiny auricles, elliptic, mostly 20-50 mm long, toothed and spine-tipped, with spines 1-4 mm long, discolorous, upper surface thinly felted or glabrous and shining, lower surface white-felted. Flowerheads 1-few in corymbs, radiate, yellow, 35-50 mm diam.; involucral bracts linear-lanceolate with spiny margins and tip, 10-20 mm long. Pappus scales 10 + 10, lanceolate or oblanceolate, denticulate, 1-2 mm long.
