Herba perennis saepe ± suffrutescens rhizomate lignoso, erecta, cr. 10-60 cm alta. Caulis ramosus, tomentosus, deinde ± glabrescens, interdum purpurascens, foliatus. Folia alterna, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, basalia ± conferta, in var. radiata saepe manifeste rosulata, ambitu obovata, basin versus angustata, interdum sub-petiolata, 5-12(-20) cm longa, 1-4(-7) cm lata, pinnatilobata lobis ambitu semiorbicularibus vel late triangulatis spinosi-dentatis (dentibus in spinas 2-3 mm longas excurrentibus), rarius vix lobata breviter tantum dentata, in interstitiis spinis minoribus ciliata, supra tenuiter tomentosa et glabrescentia, subtus albidi-tomentosa; folia caulina sensim minora, ambitu oblonga, sensim minus lobata, spinosidentata, ceterum basalibus similia. Capitula in apicibus ramorum in inflorescentiam paniculatam vel subcorymbiformem disposita, discoidea vel radiata, involucri squamis expansis 2-3(-3.5) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pauciseriatae, extus ± tomentosae, intus tenuiter tomentosae vel subglabrae vel glabrae, spinosi-acuminatae, margine spinis 1-3 mm longis in cr. 1-3 iugis dispositis saepe geminatis et ceterum spinulis brevioribus obsitae, exteriores et mediae ovati-lanceolatae, evidenter convexae (imprimis mediae), interiores lanceolatae, ± planae, mediae 8-15 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas cr. 1(-2) mm longas productae. Achaenia cr. 1.5-2 mm longa, pilis brevissimis obtecta vel subglabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 20, oblongae, obtusae, minute denticulatae, cr. 0.2-0.5 mm longae.
