Characteristics

Frutex erectus rigidus ramosus, fide collect, cr. 50-100 cm altus. Rami albitomentosi, usque ad capitula ± aequaliter foliati internodiis cr. 5-10 mm longis et alati. Folia alterna, sessilia, rigida, 2-4 cm longa supremis sensim minoribus, pinnatifida rhachide lanceo-latisubulata 3-5(-7) mm lata apice in spinam fulvam 2-5 mm longam excurrente, laciniis in 1-2(-3) iugis dispositis 3-6 mm longis ut apex rhachidis in spinam excurrentibus basi saepe spinam alteram gerentibus in foliis supremis sensim minoribus dentiformibus et denique deficientibus, margine subrevoluta, spinulis 0.2-1(-2) mm longis etiam in nervis faciei superioris proxime marginem adnatis dense obsita, supra primum leviter tomentosa, deinde glabrescentia, subtus albi-tomentosa; decurrentia in alas 1-2 mm latas ut folia spinosi et spinulosi-ciliatas indumento foliis similes. Capitula in apicibus ramorum solitaria vel complura aggregata, discoidea vel (ut videtur rarius) radiata, expansa 2-3 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, lanceolatae, spinosi-acuminatae, indumento foliis similes, exteriores 2-2.5 mm latae, dentibus 0.5-1 mm longis in 1-2 iugis dispositis in spinam excurrentibus obsitae et ceterum margine ut folia spinulosi-ciliatae,sequentes sensim paulum angustiores et denique 1-1.5 mm latae, sensim edentatae, spinulosi-ciliatae, exteriores et mediae 10-15 mm longae, interiores paulum breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas 4-8 mm longas productae. Achaenia 2.5-4 mm longa, glabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 10, late obovatae vel sub-rotundae vel late lineares, obtusae, apice denticulatae, (0.3-)0.5-0.7 mm longae, interdum in coronam connatae.

A shrub up to 1 m tall, branches cobwebby, narrowly winged, leafy. Leaves up to 5 x 1 cm, rigid, lanceolate-acuminate, spine-tipped, all but the uppermost with 1 or 2 pairs of narrowly triangular, spine-tipped lobes in the lower half, sessile, clasping, decurrent on the stem in narrow wings, margins ciliate-spinescent, upper surface cobwebby at first, later glabrous, lower white-felted.
