Herba perennis erecta. ramosa, fide collect. cr. 1-2 m alta. Caulis et rami pilis hyalinis glanduliferis minutis dense obtecti oliati et inconspicue alati. Folia alterna, inferiora ovata vel elliptica, cr. 12-20 cm longa, 5-10 cm lata, apice obtusa vel subacuta, basi leviter angustata vel obtusa vel truncata, breviter petiolata petiolo 1-4 cm longo spinosi-ciliato, margine repanda vel leviter repandi-dentata, spinulis 0.5-2 mm longis ciliata, supra pilis glanduliferis minutis dense obtecta, in sicco scaberula, subtus tenuiter cani-tomentosa; folia superiora sensim sessilia et semiamplexicaulia, sensim minora, ovati-lanceolata et denique linearia, bracteiformia, acuminata, ceterum basalibus similia; omnia decurrentia in alas angustissimas (ad summum 0.5 mm latas) inconspicuas et plerumque ad spinas 2-3 mm longas reductas. Capitula in inflorescentiam sub-corymbiformem disposita, radiata, ligulis expansis 3-4 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentee, pilis glanduliferis minutis dense obtectae, lineari-lanceolatae, 1-2 mm latae, spinosi-acuminatae, margine spinis 2-5 mm longis saepe geminatis in 2-4 iugis dispositis obsitae, mediae 10-15 mm longae, ceterae paulum breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas 1-3 mm longas productae. Achaenia cr. 1.5-2.5 mm longa, glabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 10, oblongae, obtusae, ad apicem denticulatae, 0.8-1 mm longae, interdum ± in coronam connatae.

Leaves alternate, scattered along stem; blade of lower leaves elliptic, up to ± 200 x 100 mm, apex obtuse or subacute, margins shallowly dentate or sinuate-dentate, teeth spinose, spinose-ciliate in between, upper surface harshly pubescent, lower surface white-cobwebby; upper leaves smaller, narrower, apex acute, base half-clasping, not decurrent on stem; basal leaves petiolate, upper leaves sessile. Heads radiate, 30-40 mm in diameter, many in a spreading, corymbose panicle, pedunculate. Involucral bracts connate at base, linear, up to 2.5 mm wide, apex and margins spiny, minutely glandular on backs. Flowers: ray and disc florets yellow; Mar. Fruit with cypsela turbinate, glabrous, ± 2.5 mm long. Pappus of scales, uniseriate, up to 1 mm long, obtuse.

Leaves up to c. 20 x 10 cm, elliptic, apex obtuse or subacute, base narrowed gradually or abruptly to a petiole up to 4 cm long, upper leaves smaller, narrower, sessile, half-clasping, margins denticulate or repand-denticulate, spinose-ciliate, upper surface harshly pubescent, lower white-cobwebby. Heads 3-4 cm across the expanded rays, many in a spreading corymbose panicle. Involucral bracts linear-lanceolate, up to 2.5 mm broad, tip and margins spiny, minutely glandular on the back. Rays and disc yellow. Achenes c. 2.5 mm long, turbinate, glabrous. Pappus scales up to 1 mm long, obtuse.
