Characteristics

Herba perennis erecta, cr. 40-80 cm alta, rhizomate lignoso tuberose. Caulis in speciminibus adhuc notis semper simplex, albidi-tomentosus, rarius ceterum pilis hyalinis in sicco rigidulis obsitus, tota longitudine ± aequaliter foliatus. Folia alterna, subcoriacea, lanceolata vel late lanceolata, 6-9 cm longa, (10-)15-30 mm lata superioribus sensim minoribus, apice subacuta, in spinam flavam tenuem 1-5 mm longam excurrentia, margine subrevoluta, spinulis 0.5-1 mm longis obsita, basi in petiolum cr. 2-4 mm longum saepe inconspicuum compluribus spinis setiformibus cr. 10 mm longis ciliatum angustata, supra saepe singulis spinis setiformibus prope marginem obsita, ceterum laevia vel sublaevia, primum tenuiter tomentosa, deinde glabrescentia, subtus albidi-tomentosa. Capitulum in apice caulis solitarium, radiatum, ligulis expansis 6-8(-10) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pilis glanduliferis minutis obtectae et ceterum extus tomentosae, lineares, exteriores 1-2 mm latae, sequentes sensim angustiores et denique cr. 0.5 mm latae, spinosi-acuminatae, margine spinis tenuibus setiformibus cr. 2-4 mm longis ciliatae, mediae 20-25 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Lobi corollarum florum disci apice callosi-inerassati. Achaenia cr. 1-2 mm longa, pilis sericeis brevibus ± densis obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, anguste obovatae, apice subobtusae, margine et imprimis ad apicem denticulatae, cr. 2-2.5 mm longae.
