Characteristics

Herba perennis erecta verisimiliter cr. 0.5-1 m alta. Caulis in parte superiore ramosus, pilis hyalinis glanduliferis dense puberulus, foliatus. Folia alterna, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia vel amplexicaulia, basalia ± conferta, ambitu oblonga vel oblongi-obovata, cr. 10-40 cm longa, 4-9 cm lata, pinnatilobata vel pinnatifida lobis in cr. 8-10 iugis dispositis semiorbicularibus profunde dentatis (dentibus triangulatis in spinas fulvas cr. 2-5 mm longas excurrentibus) basin folii versus decrescentibus et denique in spinas transeuntibus, in interstitiis spinis minoribus obsita, supra et subtus pilis glanduliferis obtecta, subtus ceterum ut videtur interdum levissime tomentosa; folia caulina inferiora ut basalia formata, sed sensim minora, sequentia sensim ovati-lanceolata vel ovati-cordata, spinosi-acuminata, minus lobata et denique spinosi-dentata, ceterum basalibus similia sed subtus numquam tomentosa. Capitula in apicibuff ramorum in inflorescentiam paniculatam disposita, discoidea, involucri squamis expansis 3-7 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pilis glanduliferis obtectae, spinosi-acuminatae, exteriores et mediae ovati-lanceolatae, imprimis mediae ± convexae, margine spinis 2-4 mm longis divaricatis obsitae, (5-)7-8 mm longae, interiores lanceolatae et denique lineari-lanceolatae, 1-2 mm latae, margine spinis brevioribus ciliatae et denique subinermes, mediae 15-20(-30) mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas 1-2 mm longas productae. Achaenia 1.5-2 mm longa, pilis brevissimis dense obtecta. Pappi squamae inconspicue subbiseriatae vel uniseriatae, cr. 20, oblongae velobovatae, apice rotundatae, vix denticulatae, cr. 0.5-0.8 mm longae.

Tufted perennial, up to 1 m tall, stems glandular-haired, often flushed purple. Leaves alternate, oblong, 8-10-pinnatifid, basal ones 100-400 mm long, upper smaller and cordate-auriculate, both surfaces glandular-haired but glabrescent, lobes toothed and spine-tipped, with pale spines 3-7 mm long. Flowerheads in paniculate cymes, discoid, yellow, 30-70 mm diam.; outer and median involucral bracts ovate-lanceolate with spiny margins, convex, median longest, 15-30 mm long. Pappus scales ± 20, oblong, denticulate, 0.5-0.8 mm long.
