A stout perennial herb up to c. 1 m tall branching above into a large corymbose panicle, stems glandular-pubescent, winged, leafy. Leaves up to 30 x 8 cm, decreasing in size upwards, oblong in outline, pinnatifid, lobes up to 6 each side, rounded or oblong, margins with coarse, triangular, spine-tipped teeth, interspersed with shorter and more slender spines, undulate, shortly decurrent on the stem in broad spiny wings, upper surface puberulous, lower white-felted in the typical plant, glandular-pubescent in var. glabra. Heads up to 9 cm across the expanded rays, solitary or few together at the tips of the inflorescence branches. Involucral bracts foliaceous, up to c. 10 mm broad. Rays yellow or white, disc yellow. Achenes c. 4 mm long, turbinate, glabrous. Pappus scales up to 1 mm long, obtuse.
