Herba perennis (suffrutescens?) erecta ramosa, fide collect, cr. 30-90 cm alta. Rami pilis hyalinis glanduliferis dense puberuli, foliati et partim alati. Folia alterna, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, ambitu oblonga, cr. 5-30 cm longa, 2-8 cm lata supremis sensim minoribus, pinnatilobata lobis ambitu semiorbicularibus vel reniformibus undulatis dentatis dentibus triangulatis magnitudine diversis in spinas 3-6 mm longas excurrentibus, in interstitils spinis minoribus dense ciliata, superiora sensim minus lobata et denique grosse spinosi-dentata, ceterum similia, omnia supra pilis glanduliferis minutis dense obtecta, subtus albidi-tomentosa vel (in var. glabra) ut in facie superiore vestita; decurrentia (supremis exceptis) in alas spinosi-dentatas cr. 1-4 cm longas folium proximum non attingentes. Capitula in apicibus ramorum solitaria, radiata, involucri squamis expansis (5-)6-8(-10) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pilis glanduliferis minutis obtectae et ceterum exteriores extus interdum leviter tomentosae, spinosi-acuminatae, exteriores foliaceae, (20-)25-35(-40) mm longae, 5-10 mm latae, margine ut folia suprema spinosi-dentatae et spinulosi-ciliatae, interiores sensim et denique multo minores, lineari-lanceolatae, 1.5-2 mm latae, spinosi-ciliatae. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas flexiles cr. 5-10 mm longas productae. Achaenia 3-5 mm longa, glabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 10-20, cr. 0.7-1 mm longae, obtusae vel acutae, denticulatae, saepe cum singulis acuminatis ad 1.5 mm longis intermixtae, interdum ± in coronam connatae.
