Characteristics

A perennial herb with a stout woody rootstock, flowering stem solitary from the crown, up to c. 20 cm high, simple or forking once, white-felted. Leaves up to 10 x 6.5 cm, few, mostly crowded at the base of the stem, broadly elliptic to subrotund, apex obtuse or rounded, base abruptly narrowed, petiole-like, stem leaves much smaller, oblong or subspathulate, broad-based, few, margins, of all leaves more or less entire to sinuate-dentate, setose-spinescent, upper surface cobwebby at first, later glabrous, lower white-felted. Heads radiate, terminal, solitary or paired, c. 5 cm across the expanded rays. Involucral bracts up to 12 x 3 mm, outer oblong or ungulate, inner linear, spine-tipped, margins setose-spinescent, backs of at least the outer series white-felted. Rays and disc bright yellow. Achenes not seen, ovaries pilose. Pappus scales up to 5 mm long, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, some with long bristle points.
