Characteristics

Herba perennis plerumque ± suffrutescens erecta,cr. 20-60 cm (vel ultra?)alta. Caulis in parte superiore ramosus, ± tomentosus, interdum glabrescens et purpurascens, foliatus. Folia alterna, rigida, sessilia, semi-amplexicaulia, cr. 4-8 cm longa superioribus sensim minoribus, pinnatifida rhachide lineari vellanceolata 2-5(-8)mm lata in spinam fulvam 2-4 mm longam excurrente, laciniis in cr. 4-6 iugis dispositis ceterum basin folii versus compluribus laciniis minoribus et denique ± ad spinas reductis auctis triangulate-vel lineari-subulatis cr. 5-20 mm longis apicem et basin folii versus decrescentibus 2-5 mm latis ut apex rhachidis in spinam excurrentibus cum laciniis alteris subaequilongis vel minoribus vel ad spinam reductis geminatis vel ternatis, margine subrevoluta vel revoluta, in interstitiis plerumque spinulis cr. 0.5-2 mm longis obsita, supra glabra vel subglabra vel leviter tomentosa, subtus ± albidi-tomentosa, rarius subglabra. Capitula in apicibus ramorum in inflorescentiam paniculatam plerumque ± densam disposita, discoidea, involueri squamis expansis 1.5-3.0(-3.5) cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pauciseriatae, extus ± tomentosae, intus glabrae vel subglabrae, spinosi-acuminatae, margine spinis 1-2 mm longis in 1-3 iugis dispositis ± basi approximatis plerumque geminatis et ceterum spinulis brevioribus obsitae, exteriores breviter triangulatae, mediae ovati-triangulatae vel-lanoeolatae, convexae, interiores lanoeolatae, planae, mediae 8-15(-20) mm longae, oeterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in setas stramineas cr. 1(-2) mm longas productae. Achaenia cr. 1.5-2.5 mm longa, pilis brevissimis sparsis obtecta vel glabra. Pappi squamae uniseriatae, cr. 20, oblongi-subrotundae, obtusae, minute denticulatae, cr. 0.2 mm longae.

Rigid, 30–80 cm high, perennial herb with extensive roots and creeping rhizomes. Branches terete, cobwebby-canescent, becoming glabrous with age. Leaves rigid, sessile, amplexicaul, lanceolate to ovate, (4–) 5–10 cm long, 2–4 cm wide, deeply pinnatifid to pinnatisect with triangular or lanceolate to subulate, apically stiff spiny lobes, revolute-margined, bluish green and almost glabrous above, densely white-hairy beneath. Capitula 5–10 mm across, several in terminal and axillary corymbose clusters; involucre 3–4-seriate; bracts herbaceous, ovate-triangular or ovate-lanceolate, 8–12 (–15) mm long, concave, patent, spiny-margined; outermost ±tomentose; receptacle pitted; paleae deeply lacerate, 1 (–2) mm long. Ray florets absent. Disc florets 30–40, yellow; corolla tubular, 5-lobed. Achenes turbinate, 1.5–2.5 (–3) mm long, glabrous or sparsely short-hairy, persistent. Pappus scales oblong-rotund, c. 0.2 mm long, fused into a crown, obtuse.
