Characteristics

Suffrutex basi ramosus; rami basales lignosi, cr. 5 mm crassi; rami florigeri erecti, simplices vel rarius pauciramosi, 10-30 cm alti, albi-tomentosi, foliati internodiis cr. 2-3 cm longis. Folia alterna, sessilia, rosulata in basi ramorum florigerorum, lanceolati-obovata, basin versus cuneatim angustata, 2-3(-4) cm longa, 5-15 mm lata, apice acuta, in spinam fulvam 2-5 mm longam excurrentia, margine spinis similibus in 2-3 iugis obsita, supra leviter tomentosa et glabrescentia, subtus albi-tomentosa; folia ramorum florigerorum paulum minora, cr. 1-2 cm longa, 3-8 mm lata, lanceolata, ceterum rosulatis similia. Capitula in apicibus ramorum solitaria, radiata, ligulis expansis 4-6 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, extus ± tomentosae, intus subglabrae vel glabrae, spinosi-acuminatae, exteriores lanceolatae, 2-3 mm latae, margine spinis fulvis solitariis vel geminatis in 2-4 iugis dispositis cr. 3-5 mm longis obsitae, sequentes sensim lineari-lanceolatae, margine brevius spinosi-ciliatae et denique inermes, mediae 10-15 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi breviter denticulatae. Achaenia cr. 2-2.5 mm longa, pilis sericeis dense obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, 10+10, lanceolatae, acutae, irregulariter denticulatae, cr. 1-1.5 mm longae.

Shrub, up to 1 m high, bushy. Stems not winged, leafless in lower part, young stems white-felted. Leaves almost in a rosette at branch tips, some scattered along stem below heads, sessile; blade narrowly obovate, up to 40 x 15 mm, apex acute, base cuneate, margins distantly spine-toothed in upper half, upper surface glabrous, lower surface white-felted; bractlike leaves on peduncles alternate, smaller. Heads radiate, 50-70 mm in diameter, solitary, terminal, on white-felted shoots 150-300 mm long. Involucral bracts connate at base, linear or very narrowly ovate, up to 3 mm wide, tips and margins spiny, white-felted on backs. Flowers: ray and disc florets yellow; Jan.-Apr. Fruit with cypsela villous, turbinate, ± 2 mm long. Pappus of scales, biseriate, up to 1.5 mm long, narrowly ovate, acute.

Leaves almost rosetted at the branch tips, up to 4 x 1.5 cm, oblanceolate, narrowed to a petiole-like base, distantly spine-toothed in the upper half, glabrous above, white-felted below. Heads 5-7 cm across the expanded rays, solitary, terminal, on distantly leafy, white-felted shoots 15-30 cm long. Involucral bracts lanceolate, up to 3 mm broad, tips and margins spiny, white-felted on the backs. Rays and disc yellow. Achenes c. 2 mm long, turbinate, villous. Pappus scales up to 2.5 mm long, narrowly lanceolate, acuminate.
