Characteristics

Herba perennis erecta, cr. 30-70 cm alta, verisimiliter rhizomate lignoso. Gaulis simplex vel in parte superiore parce ramosus, pilis glanduliferis minutis dense obtectus, in parte inferiore et media ± dense, superne laxius foliatus. Folia alterna, coriacea, rigida, sessilia, semiamplexicaulia, lanceolati-oblonga vel ovati-oblonga, apice acuta vel subobtusa, cr. 2-5 cm longa, 8-20(-25)mm lata superioribus sensim minoribus, margine dense spinosi-ciliata spinis 1-3(-6) mm longis vel spinosi-dentata dentibus 1-2 mm longis, supra pilis glanduliferis minutissimis obtecta, glabrescentia et nitentia, subtus nivei-tomentosa. Capitula in apice caulis simplicis vel in apicibus ramorum solitaria, radiata, ligulis expansis 5-7 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pilis glanduliferis minutissimis obtectae, spinosi-acuminatae, margine spinis 1-3 mm longis ciliatae, exteriores et mediae lineari-lanceolatae, 1.5-2 mm latae, sequentes sensim lineares, 0.5-1 mm latae, mediae 15-20(-25) mm longae, ceterae breviores. Lobi corollarum florum disci apice callosi-incrassati. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in dentes cr. 1 mm longos productae. Achaenia cr. 2-3 mm longa, pilis sericeis brevibus ± densis obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, oblongi-obovatae vel oblongi-lanceolatae, subobtusae vel acutae, apicem versus denticulatae vel ± incisae, 1.5-2.5 mm longae.
