Characteristics

Frutex erectus ramosus fide collect, cr. 30-100 cm altus. Rami patentes, in partibus iunioribus pilis glanduliferis minutissimis sparsis obtecti, ceterum glabri, saepe purpurascentes, in partibus vetustioribus cortice canifusco rimoso obtecti, usque ad capitula ± aequaliter foliati. Folia alterna, sessilia, rigide membranacea, ambitu obovata, (10-)15-30 mm longa, 5-15 mm lata, apice in spinam flavam vel fulvam 2-3 mm longam excurrentia, basin versus angustata, margine plana, spinosi-dentata dentibus in 2-3 iugis dispositis in spinas ei in apice similes excurrentibus, praeterea ad basin paucis spinis minoribus obsita, supra et subtus primum pilis glanduliferis minutissimis sparse obtecta, mox glabrata. Capitula in apicibus ramorum solitaria, radiata, ligulis expansis 3.5-4 cm diam. Involucri squamae patentes, pauciseriatae, pilis glanduliferis minutissimis sparse obsitae, in spinam 2-3 mm longam acuminatae, exteriores lanceolatae, (1.5-)2-3 mm latae, margine spinis eis in foliis similibus in 1-3 iugis obsitae, sequentes sensim paulum angustiores, lineari-lanceolatae, 1-1.5 mm latae, margine minus spinosae et denique setulis brevissimis denticulatae, mediae 10-15 mm longae, ceterae paulum breviores. Margines alveolarum receptaculi in dentes brevissimos productae. Achaenia cr. 2-2.5 mm longa, pilis sericeis dense obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, cr. 10+10, lineari-subulatae, longe aeuminatae, cr. 0.3 mm latae, denticulatae, 3-5(-7) mm longae.

Glabrous shrublet, up to 1 m tall. Leaves alternate, obovate, 2-or 3-toothed and spine-tipped, mostly 15-30 mm long, with spines 2-3 mm long, both surfaces glabrous. Flowerheads solitary or in lax cymes, radiate, yellow, 35-40 mm diam.; involucral bracts lanceolate with spiny margins and tip, 10-15 mm long. Cypselas densely silky; pappus scales 10 + 10, subulate, denticulate, 3-7 mm long.
