Characteristics

Suffrutex erectus ramosus, fide collect. 40-170 cm altus. Rami in partibus iunioribus leviter vel levissime tomentosi et ceterum pilis glanduliferis minutissimis ± dense obtecti vel pilis hyalinis puberuli et ceterum araneosi, deinde glabrescentes, cortice chartaceo ochroleuco interdum leviter purpurascenti obtecti. Folia opposita, interdum suprema sub capitulis alterna, sessilia, basi inter se connata, membranacea, ambitu oblonga vel obovati-oblonga vel subrotunda vel ovata, 2-6(-9) cm longa, 1-3(-5) cm lata supremis sub capitulis sensim minoribus, apice acuta, in spinam flavam vel fulvam 3-10(-12) mm longam excurrentia, margine ± plana, sinuati-pinnatilobata lobis grosse dentatis dentibus in spinas ei in apice similes excurrentibus, in ssp. namaensi sinuati-spinosi-dentata vix lobata, supra et subtus ut partes iuniores ramorum vestita, ± glabrescentia. Capitula in apicibus ramorum solitaria vel inflorescentias subcymosas formantia, radiata, expansa (3.5-)4-6(-7) cm diam. Involcri squamae patentes, indumento foliis similes, in spinam flavam 3-10 mm longam excurrentes, exteriores ovatae vel oblongae,3-5(-8) mm latae, margine spinis 3-5 mm longis divaricatis saepe geminatis obsitae, sequentes sensim angus-tiores et denique lineari-lanceolatae, 1.5-2 mm latae, brevius spinosae et denique subinermes, mediae 10-20 mm longae, ceterae breviores. Corollae florum disci praeter pilos glanduliferos minutos saepe aibi-lanosi. Margines alveolarum receptaculi integerrimae. Achaenia cr. 1.5-2.5 mm longa, pilis sericeis dense obtecta. Pappi squamae subbiseriatae, 10+10, lanceolatae vel obovari-lanceolatae, acutae, denticulatae, 1-1.5 mm longae.

Subshrub, up to 1.5 m tall, stems glandular-haired and cobwebbed when young, glabrescent, usually tinged purplish. Leaves mostly opposite but uppermost alternate, decussate, pinnatifid, ovate to oblong, shallowly lobed, blade 20-90 x 10-50 mm, thin-textured, thinly or thickly cobwebbed on both surfaces, usually glabrescent, lobes toothed and with 5-8 mm long, pale spines. Flowerheads in cymes, radiate, yellow; disc florets cobwebbed, mostly 40-60 mm diam.; outer bracts resembling leaves but narrower, ± subulate, 3-8 mm wide, inner bracts lanceolate, spine-tipped with denticulate margins, ± glabrous, 8-15 mm long.
