Characteristics

Inflorescences bisexual (or unisexual), short-branched cymose to subcapitate, sometimes subinvolucrate. Staminate flowers several to one (or lacking), pedicellate; tepals 4 or 5, valvate in the bud; stamens 4 (or 5), inflexed in the bud. Pistillate flowers 1 or 2 in the centre of the inflorescence (or lacking), (sub)sessile; tepals 4, connate, forming a tubular, dentate perianth; ovary free, stigmas 2, equal. Fruiting perianth enlarged, slightly fleshy, pink; fruit free, a dehiscent drupe, whitish, endocarp thinly crustaceous; seed without endosperm, cotyledons thick, flat, unequal to subequal, radicle short.
