Characteristics

Deciduous shrub 1–3 m high, much branched, once described as scrambling; young branches pubescent or glabrous.. Leaves ovate to elliptic, 2–9.5 cm long, 1–6 cm wide, base subcordate to attenuate, margins entire or nearly so, apex acute, densely pubescent to almost glabrous on both surfaces and eglandular; petiole 4–14 mm.. Glomerules solitary, terminal; individual glomerules globose and 10–15 mm across, with up to 75 capitula; capitula with 2 female and 2 male florets; phyllaries 2–3 mm long; paleae 3–5 mm long.. Flowers greenish white, white or pale yellow; female florets 1.5–2.5 mm long, glabrous; male florets 2–3 mm long, glabrous.. Achenes of female florets obovoid, 1.5–2.5 mm long, with twin-hairs; pappus of 2 lateral scales 0.5–1 mm long and 2–6 shorter scales on the abaxial side.. Achenes of male florets 0.5–1.5 mm long, with pappus of 7–17 flat scales 0.5–2.5 mm long.
