Characteristics

Evergreen shrub, 1–3 m high or scrambling to 8 m long; stem near base up to 5 cm in diameter; young branches densely pubescent.. Leaves ovate, lanceolate or elliptic, 3–12(–19) cm long, 1–7(–10) cm wide, base truncate to obtuse or cuneate, margins entire to dentate, apex acute to acuminate, glabrous and sparsely pubescent, especially on veins beneath, and eglandular; petiole 5–12 mm.. Glomerules 3–40 together in cymes, terminal; individual glomerules globose and 11–15 mm across, with up to 70 capitula; capitula with 2 female and 2 male florets; phyllaries 2–4 mm long; paleae 4–5.5 mm long.. Flowers greenish white or white, fragrant; female florets 2–2.5 mm long, glabrous; male florets 3–4 mm long, glabrous.. Achenes of female florets obovoid, 2–3.5 mm long, with twin-hairs; pappus of 2 lateral scales 1–1.5 mm long and 1–4 shorter scales on the abaxial side.. Achenes of male florets 0.5–1.5 mm long, with pappus of 7–13 flat scales 0.5–3 mm long.. Fig. 145 (page 712).
