Characteristics

Woody herb or sub-shrub 0.9-2.4 m tall; stems dull purple-brown, finely crispate-pubescent.. Leaves alternate, petiolate, elliptic, 8-19.5 cm long, 2.4-8 cm wide, base cuneate to attenuate, margins serrate, apex acute or acuminate, sparsely shortly crispate-pubescent above and beneath especially on the main veins; petiole 0.3-3 cm long.. Capitula numerous in small, often rather congested clusters in terminal and upper axillary compound corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula crispate-pubescent to tomentose with brownish hairs; involucres obconic-cylindrical to campanulate, 7-13 mm long, 8-10 mm in diameter; phyllaries more or less 3-seriate, narrowly ovate, acute or obtuse and pungent-apiculate, inner pectinate-fimbriate on the pallid or lilac membranous margins, acute, 6-10 mm long, all somewhat darker centrally towards the apex, glabrous or the outer sometimes also pubescent centrally or ciliate on the margins.. Corolla lilac or mauve, 5-7 mm long, lobes 2.3-2.5 mm long, glabrous.. Achenes 2-3 mm long, with 5 rounded ribs; pappus 2.2-3.5 mm long.
