Stems leafy, branching in upper part, thinly-spongy on the outside especially on the lower stem, glabrous or very sparsely puberulous, sparsely glandular; branches to c. 13 cm. long, filiform, spreading, usually purplish.
Phyllaries few-seriate, usually purplish, glandular and sparsely puberulous outside, margins subhyaline, the outer from c. 2 mm. long, the remainder c. 3 mm. long, lanceolate to ± oblong.
Leaves alternate, sessile, soon withering on lower stem, mostly 10–45 x 2–3 mm., linear, semi-fleshy, glabrous or sparsely puberulous, gland-pitted.
Corollas mauve, strongly exserted, c. 3 mm. long, limb broadly campanulate, tube slender, glandular otherwise glabrous.
Capitula many, laxly paniculate, 1–8 on each branch; capitula-stalks somewhat divaricate, to c. 30 mm. long, filiform.
Achenes (immature) c. 0.5-? mm. long, ?-ribbed; pappus absent.
An erect slender subaquatic annual herb to c. 45 cm. tall.
Involucres 2–3 x 3.5–4 mm., broadly obconic.
