Characteristics

Branching shrub 2.4-3 m tall; stems erect, shaggy with brown hairs.. Leaves alternate, petiolate, elliptic or narrowly ovate or obovate, 6-20 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, base attenuate, margins serrate, apex acuminate, thinly scattered-pubescent and more densely pubescent on main veins beneath and above; petioles up to 2.5 cm long.. Capitula numerous in dense subglobose clusters in terminal compound corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula shortly tomentose; involucre narrowly obconic-cylindrical, 5-7 mm long; phyllaries 3-4-seriate, outer and median ovate-oblong, pungent-apiculate, broadly membranous-margined, inner narrowly ovate, with broad fimbriate-pectinate margins, pungent-apiculate, glabrous, 6-6.3 mm long, all purplish distally.. Corolla purplish white or pale mauve, 5.5-6 mm long, lobes 2 mm long, glabrous.. Achene (immature) ± 1.5 mm long, crowned with a short toothed rim, and with few caducous bristles 1.5-3 mm long.
