Characteristics

Perennial herb with woody base or shrub, to 1.8 m tall; branches numerous, ascending, ascending-pubescent.. Leaves opposite, petiolate, greyish green, narrowly ovate or elliptic, 4.5-12 cm long, 1.2-4 cm wide, base cuneate and often very unequally so, margins serrate, apex obtusely acuminate, densely finely crispate-pubescent or finely strigose above, densely crispate-tomentose beneath; petiole 0.6-1.8 cm long.. Capitula in terminal compound corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula densely ascending-tomentose; involucres obconic-cylindrical, 10-13 mm long, 5-11 mm in diameter at flowering time; phyllaries ± 4-seriate, narrowly ovate, pungent, densely tomentose, the median darker and pubescent below apex, with broad pale scarious pectinate-fimbriate margins, the inner glabrous and 8.5-9.5 mm long.. Corolla lilac or pale lilac, 7.5 mm long, lobes 2.5 mm long.. Achenes 2-3 mm long, 5-7-ribbed; pappus 2 mm long.
