Characteristics

Erect woody herb or shrub 0.9-1.2 m tall; stems thickly long-tomentose or floccose.. Leaves opposite, petiolate or sessile, ovate or elliptic, 4-16 cm long, 2-7 cm wide, base cuneate (but petiole base half-amplexicaul), margins crenate-serrate, apex obtuse and minutely apiculate, finely softly pubescent and subglabrescent except for main veins above, densely long-tomentose or floccose beneath; petiole when present up to 1 cm long.. Capitula in ultimately congested terminal and upper axillary compound corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula thickly spreading-tomentose; involucres hemispherical-obconic, 4-6 mm long; phyllaries in several series, narrowly ovate, densely tomentose and the outer more or less obscuring the inner, shortly pungent-apiculate, the inner glabrous or pubescent below the apex and 4-6 mm long.. Corolla purple, 5-6 mm long, lobes 2-2.5 mm long.. Achenes 2-2.2 mm long, 5-9-ribbed; pappus 1.5 mm long.
