Shrub 1-2(-4) m tall; stems erect, finely appressed-pubescent, glabrescent.. Leaves alternate, petiolate, elliptic or ovate, 5-20 cm long, 2.5-7 cm wide, base cuneate to attenuate, margins rather coarsely acutely serrate, apex acuminate to somewhat attenuate, scattered-pubescent above and mainly on veins beneath; petiole crispate-pubescent, 0.7-3 cm long.. Capitula numerous in rather dense cymes, organized in lax terminal compound corymbs; stalks of individual capitula crispate-pubescent; involucres obconic-campanulate, 4-5 mm long, 3-4 mm in diameter; phyllaries 3-4-seriate, (narrowly) ovate, more or less pubescent on the margins, the inner pectinate-laciniate, acuminate or attenuate, pungent, 4-5 mm long, all darker in centre towards the apex.. Florets 8-15; corolla light purple or mauve, 5-6 mm long, lobes 2.2-2.5 mm long, glabrous.. Achenes turbinate, 1.5-2 mm long, almost smooth, 4-5-ribbed, crowned with a small undulate-denticulate rim; pappus of few caducous bristles 1.7-2 mm long.
