Characteristics

Leaves alternate, sessile, mostly 3–15 x 0.3–1.3 cm., linear-oblanceolate, the uppermost narrowly triangular, tapering to a narrowly subobtuse mucronate apex, ± broadly auriculate below, margins serrate; upper surface, margins and midribs below with large white multicellular hairs.

Phyllaries scarious with subhyaline margins, obscurely 3–5-nerved, sparsely glandular, otherwise glabrous, from c. 2 mm. long outside to c. 11 mm. long inside, lanceolate to lanceolate-acuminate, tapering to a ± pungent or short bristle-tip.
Stems leafy, sparsely laxly branched above, ± densely pilose-pubescent to glabrescent; indumentum of large whitish patent flagelliform hairs usually intermixed on the upper stem with smaller somewhat crispate flagelliform hairs.
Achenes 1.4–2 mm. long, narrowly oblong-obovoid, rounded at the apex with a small apical depression, low and broadly 4–6-ribbed with narrower dark-brown, densely gland-filled grooves in between; pappus absent.
Capitula few to many, laxly corymbiform cymose; capitula stalks 0.1–6 cm. longwith leaf-like bracts.
Involucres 10–12 x 6–10(15) mm., campanulate-cyathiform, later somewhat spreading.
Corollas white or mauve, 8–10 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, glabrous.
An erect annual herb or subshrub to c. 1.2 m. tall.
