Loosely tufted annual, the culms often weak and procumbent or geniculately ascending; culms 20–100 cm. high.. Leaf-blades narrowly lanceolate, 1–15 cm. long, 3–15 mm. wide, the margins cartilaginous.. Inflorescence of 6–15 racemes on an axis 5–20 cm. long; racemes 1–10 cm. long with ± pubescent triquetrous rhachis, the spikelets borne on short secondary branchlets or in dense fascicles, these copious so that the inflorescence resembles a panicle.. It is a tropical plant. It grows in deciduous bush-land in west Africa. It grows in dry sandy soil. It grows in areas with an annual rainfall above 500 mm. It grows between 600-2,000 m above sea level. It can grow in arid places.

Can be grown by seedlings.
