Densely tufted perennial 300-1200 mm high; rhizome long, creeping. Leaf blade to 300 x 5-9 mm; ligule a fringe of hairs. Racemes 15-30(-40) mm long, secund; rachis triquetrous, sometimes very narrowly winged, less than 1 mm wide, villous; spikelets in two rows; pedicels of equal lengths. Spikelet 3-4 mm long, supported on a dark coloured stipe; lower glume 1/3-1/2(-2/3) as long as spikelet, often long-acuminate but very variable in the same inflorescence, distinctly darkly coloured at the base, 3-5-nerved; upper glume and lower lemma acuminate; upper lemma acute to mucronulate, obscurely rugulose; anther 1.0-2.3 mm long.
Perennial; up to 1.2 m high; densely tufted; with long and creeping rhizome. Culms erect; unbranched; nodes with short; white hairs. Leaf blades up to 300 x 5-9 mm. Flowers: inflorescence subdigitate; racemes secund; 15-30(-40) mm long; pedicels equal; spikelets 3-4 mm long; in 2 rows; lower glume acuminate but very variable in same inflorescence; distinctly darker coloured at base; clasping short internode between 2 glumes; upper glume and lower lemma also acuminate.
Perennial, densely tufted and rhizomatous (rhizome long and creeping), up to 1.2 m high. Leaf blades up to 300 mm long, 5-9 mm wide. Spikelets 3-4 mm long. Racemes secund, 15-30(-40) mm long; spikelets in 2 rows, pedicels equal; lower glume acuminate but very variable in the same inflorescence, distinctly darker coloured at base and clasping short internode between the two glumes; upper glume and lower lemma also acuminate.
Spikelets 3.5–5 mm. long, ovate-elliptic, silky villous with off-white hairs these becoming longer above and often gathered into a loose transverse fringe, acuminate to a subulate point, supported by a cylindrical black stipe c. 0.5 mm. long.
Inferior glume 1/3–1/2 (2/3) length of spikelet, acute to acuminate; superior glume and inferior lemma acuminate to a subulate point up to 1 mm. long. Superior lemma obscurely rugulose, acute to mucronate.
Inflorescence of 5–16 racemes, these 1–6 cm. long, bearing spikelets singly in 2 rows on a villous triquetrous rhachis.
Densely tufted perennial, the base ± bulbous and clad in silky tomentose sheaths.
Leaf laminae pubescent to villous.
Culms 25–100 cm. high.
